Chiropractic Care and Your Immune System: An Honest Look

2 min read March 30, 2022 By Forza

Short answer: chiropractic care does not boost your immune system. That claim is common in chiropractic marketing and it is not supported by good evidence. Here is what is actually known, and the one honest connection worth making.

Where the claim comes from

The reasoning usually runs: the nervous system influences immune function, the spine houses the nervous system, therefore adjusting the spine improves immunity. Each step sounds plausible and the chain does not hold. Nervous and immune systems do interact, but no reliable body of research shows that spinal manipulation produces a clinically meaningful change in immune function, infection rates, or how often people get sick.

Some clinics cite small early studies on immune markers. Those have not been replicated at a standard that would justify telling a patient their care will keep them from getting ill. We are not going to tell you that.

The honest connection: sleep, stress and movement

Persistent pain degrades sleep, raises stress and cuts how much people move. All three genuinely affect how well someone feels and functions, and sleep in particular has real links to immune health. When care resolves the pain that was wrecking someone’s sleep, the benefit runs through the sleep — not through the adjustment acting on the immune system directly.

That is a smaller claim than “boosts immunity.” It has the advantage of being true.

What to do if you are getting sick often

See your physician. Recurrent infections deserve an actual workup, and a chiropractor is not the right first stop. We are happy to treat the back pain that is keeping you up at night; we are not treating your immune system, and framing it that way would risk delaying care that would help.

For families weighing ongoing care, our family chiropractor in Arlington Heights page covers what we do and do not treat at each age. More on Dr. Drew Voelsch’s approach and credentials.

If you have a musculoskeletal problem worth measuring, call (847) 472-1224 or book an evaluation. If what you describe is not musculoskeletal, we will tell you that instead.
