Chiropractic Care and Sinus Issues: What the Evidence Shows
Short answer: chiropractic care does not treat sinusitis. There is no reliable evidence that spinal or “sinus” adjustment clears a sinus infection or prevents one, and we are not going to imply otherwise.
What sinusitis actually is
Inflammation of the sinus linings, usually following a viral infection, sometimes bacterial, sometimes driven by allergy or structural issues in the nose. It presents as facial pressure, congestion, discharge and often a headache across the forehead and cheekbones. Chronic sinusitis means those symptoms persist for twelve weeks or more, and it deserves a proper medical assessment.
Why the chiropractic claim circulates
Some clinics offer “sinus adjustments” or facial and cranial techniques said to promote drainage. The evidence base for changing the course of sinusitis is not there. Many people also feel briefly better after any hands-on facial or upper-neck work, which is easy to read as treatment when it is short-lived symptomatic relief.
Sinusitis is also largely self-limiting. Most episodes resolve on their own within a couple of weeks, so almost any intervention timed mid-episode will look effective.
The part that is genuinely ours
Sinus pressure and neck-driven headaches are frequently confused, and the distinction matters because the treatments are completely different. A cervicogenic headache — one originating in the upper neck — can produce pain across the forehead and behind the eyes that people reasonably assume is sinus. If your “sinus headaches” keep coming back with clear scans, normal ENT findings and no infection, the upper neck is worth examining.
That is a real and often-missed diagnosis, and it is something we can measure. It is not the same as claiming to treat sinusitis.
What to do
Persistent or recurrent sinus symptoms belong with your physician or an ENT. If the assessment comes back clear and the headaches continue, come and have the neck looked at. More on Dr. Drew Voelsch’s approach.
