Despite the warmer weather, the return of the green grass, and the buds on the trees, many of us can’t enjoy spring fully because of allergies. Around 50 million people in the United States have allergies.

While you may be aware that chiropractic treatments can help with many ailments. However, you may be surprised to learn that they can also aid with allergies and asthma. Continue reading to find out how a chiropractor can help you if you suffer from seasonal allergies or asthma.

The Root of Allergy-Induced Responses

Generally, allergies are an immune system overreaction when a person is exposed to an allergen. When exposed to a particular allergen, immune cells such as Th2 lymphocytes produce several inflammatory mediators. These mediators include cytokines, chemokines, and interleukins.

The pro-inflammatory cytokines help to destroy the allergen. However, there are also several other symptoms associated with the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including:

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Itchy throat
  • Itchy eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Asthma

Among the items listed above, asthma’s most common symptom is coughing. This is usually brought on by constricted airways or by allergens or irritants triggering the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines from immune cells.

Pro-inflammatory cytokines then induce an influx of leukocytes such as lymphocytes and eosinophils into the airways. These leukocytes then release other pro-inflammatory cytokines, building a cycle of symptoms that rapidly build up in a short time.

All this inflammation is to constrict the airways and bring on coughing and wheezing. In severe cases, spasms in the bronchioles prevent the person from inhaling enough oxygen consistently.

The Immune System’s Mysterious Connection with Chiropractic Care

So what does this have to do with chiropractic care? Well, chiropractic care can help aid the immune system. This can be done by finding and treating any nerve interference occurring in the nervous system.

When you visit a chiropractor, they will assess your nervous system by observing how you walk, sit or stand, move your neck and how to move your head. They are looking for signs of nerve interference or nerve dysfunction.

If the chiropractor finds that you do have nerve interference, they can then start to assess your skeletal alignment, as this will also impact the nervous system. Once they have considered your alignment, they can begin to treat you.

Chiropractic treatment focuses on restoring nerve function by restoring nerves that have been compressed or irritated by spinal misalignment. Chiropractors often use various methods, including stretching, traction, exercise rehabilitation, postural rehabilitation, and manipulation, to improve nerve function and help an individual live a more comfortable life.

Now that you know that a chiropractor can help you with your allergies, it’s time to make an appointment. Every chiropractor has a different style of adjusting. You should first find a chiropractor that you feel comfortable working with. Once you have the chiropractor you prefer, make it a habit to book sessions regularly.

The frequency of your adjustments will depend on your individual needs. If you suffer from an allergy, you may need to be adjusted more frequently. By improving your nervous system, your immune system will function more effectively, which will reduce your allergies. If you have asthma, you may also find that your symptoms improve.
