Disc Issues
Bulging and herniated discs are often manageable without surgery. We reduce nerve pressure and restore healthy motion.

The discs between your vertebrae act as shock absorbers. When one bulges or herniates, it can press on nearby nerves and create pain, numbness, or weakness. The encouraging reality: most disc problems improve with conservative care, and surgery is rarely the first or only option.
Do disc problems require surgery?
Usually not. Most disc herniations settle over time with the right conservative approach. Our corrective care reduces irritation around the nerve and restores controlled motion, while we avoid any movement that would aggravate the disc.
How we relieve disc-related nerve pressure
Disc problems frequently drive sciatica and stubborn back pain. We confirm the level and severity, then use Chiropractic Biophysics protocols to load the spine safely and rebuild the support that protects the disc.
Bulging disc vs. herniated disc
A bulging disc means the disc has spread beyond its normal border while its outer wall stays intact; a herniated disc means that wall has cracked and the inner material pushes out, often pressing on a nerve. Herniations are more likely to cause radiating pain — but both respond well to conservative, controlled care in the great majority of cases.
What it feels like — and why it happens.
Common symptoms
- Radiating pain into an arm or leg
- Numbness or tingling
- Muscle weakness
- Pain that worsens with certain positions
- Localized back or neck pain
- Discomfort with prolonged sitting
Common causes
- Age-related disc wear
- Repetitive bending or lifting
- Sudden injury or trauma
- Prolonged poor posture
- Weak supporting musculature
- Genetic predisposition
Who’s at risk — and when to get checked.
Risk factors
- Repetitive bending, lifting, or twisting
- Prolonged sitting and poor posture
- Age-related disc degeneration
- Weak core and trunk muscles
- Excess body weight
- Smoking, which reduces disc nutrition
When to seek care
- Back or neck pain radiating into a limb
- Numbness or tingling in an arm or leg
- Weakness or heaviness in a limb
- Pain that worsens with sitting or bending
- Symptoms lasting more than one to two weeks
- Loss of bladder or bowel control (seek urgent care)
From problem to outcome.
A clear, four-part path — so you always understand what’s happening and what comes next.
The Problem
A disc bulge or herniation occurs when the soft center pushes against or through its outer wall, often irritating an adjacent nerve. The result can be local pain plus radiating symptoms into an arm or leg, depending on the level involved.
How We Evaluate
We confirm disc involvement with neurological testing and correlate it with imaging where appropriate. Identifying the exact level and severity tells us whether conservative care is appropriate and how to load the spine safely.
How We Treat It
Care reduces irritation around the nerve, restores controlled motion to the segment, and rebuilds support so the disc is protected. We progress movement carefully, avoiding positions that aggravate the disc.
Expected Outcome
Many patients experience steady relief as the nerve calms and the segment stabilizes — often avoiding injections or surgery. Corrective work reduces the risk of recurrence.
Conservative care vs. spinal surgery
What progress looks like.
Every body is different, but here’s the general arc of care most patients follow.
Calm
Reduce nerve irritation and radiating symptoms.
Stabilize
Rebuild support around the affected segment.
Strengthen
Progressive movement to protect the disc.
Questions about disc issues
Usually not. The majority of disc herniations improve with conservative care over time. Surgery is reserved for cases with progressive neurological loss or failure of appropriate non-surgical care.
When done correctly, yes. We tailor technique and force to your specific findings and avoid any approach that would aggravate the disc.
Many disc herniations shrink and settle over time with the right conservative care. We support that process by reducing irritation and restoring safe motion while avoiding positions that aggravate the disc.
Early on we limit repetitive bending, twisting, and prolonged sitting. We will give you a specific list and reintroduce activity progressively as you improve.

“I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Drew and the entire team! From the moment I walked in, the environment was friendly, welcoming, and professional. They really took the time to understand my issue—taking X-rays, thoroughly explaining what was going on, and prescribing a treatment plan that made sense. Full disclosure: I had been to three other chiropractors for the same issue (sciatica) and never found relief… until now. I’m happy to report that the treatment worked! Thank you, Dr. Drew and staff, for your outstanding care!”
